In his freshman season in 2016, Montgomery played all 12 games, starting the last four. He led the team in rushing with 563 yards, he earned the second-best freshman performance in school history. He also rushed for 169 yards on 24 carries against Kansas, securing the title of Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. The season concluded with him making the honorable mention Freshman All-America team.

Montgomery's breakout was in the 2017 season, leading the Cyclones in rushing with 1,095 and 1,383 yards. He ranked second in the Big 12 for rushing yards and touchdowns The running back showcased remarkable skills with 104 forced missed tackles.

His more admirable performances include a crucial role in a win against #3 Oklahoma. At season's end, he received accolades as a first-team All-American by Pro Football Focus and consensus first-team All-Big 12 honors.
