Sean O'Malley witnessed a meteoric rise in professional mixed martial arts and created a niche for himself in a brief time. He made his professional debut in 2015 and spent his initial years competing in multiple fight promotions. O'Malley entered The Ultimate Fighter: A New World Champion Finale on December 1, 2017, and faced Terrion Ware. He won the bout by a unanimous decision and progressed further in the UFC.

After establishing a long winning streak, O'Malley dislodged Aljamain Sterling from the bantamweight throne at UFC 292. He made quick work of Sterling by knocking him out in the first round to win the title. O'Malley defended it once against Marlon Vera at UFC 299 before dropping it to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 306. He is slated to return to the octagon to face Dvalishvili in a rematch at UFC 316.
