The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Utah Jazz are a professional basketball team from the United States, located in Salt Lake City. As a member of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference, the Jazz play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Home games have been held at the Delta Center since the 1991–92 season. The team was the NBA expansion franchise for the 1974–75 season and was called the New Orleans Jazz, as a nod to the city of New Orleans being the birthplace of jazz music. The Jazz moved their base from New Orleans to Salt Lake City on June 8, ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌1979.

History

Ad

On‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ June 7, 1974, the New Orleans Jazz were welcomed as a new expansion franchise into the National Basketball Association (NBA). The initial owner of the team was a group headed by Sam Battistone. Team executives picked the name as a result of its meaning in the dictionary: collective improvisation. The team launched its first season in New Orleans in the 1974–75 season. The team colors were purple, gold, and green.

The first significant move of the team was to trade for star player Pete Maravich (who had played college basketball at LSU) from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for two first-round draft picks, three second-round picks, and one third-round pick for the next three ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌years.

John Stockton:

John‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Stockton was with the Utah Jazz for his whole NBA career (1984–2003), and the team qualified for the playoffs in every one of his 19 seasons. In 1997 and 1998, with his close teammate Karl Malone, Stockton took the Jazz to the only two NBA Finals of the franchise, both times losing to the Chicago Bulls.

Stockton was selected to the NBA All-Star Game ten times, and he is by far the player who holds the most assists and steals in NBA history. For his individual career, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009, and again, as a member of the 1992 United States Olympic basketball team, in 2010. In 1996, he was ranked among the 50 greatest players in NBA ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌history.

Karl Malone:

Karl Malone is the player who holds the record for the third most points scored in NBA history with 36,928, and he is also ranked seventh in the all-time rebound list with ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌14,968.

Adrian Dantley:

Dantley's‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ stats over seven years with the Jazz are nearly unbelievable: 29.6 points per game, 6.2 rebounds per game, 3.7 assists per game, and 56.2 percent field goal percentage. He holds the following records for the franchise: 10th place in assists, 3rd place in points, and 2nd place in field goal ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌percentage.

Pete Maravich:
