Utah Jazz Bio

The Utah Jazz are a professional basketball team from the United States, located in Salt Lake City. As a member of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference, the Jazz play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Home games have been held at the Delta Center since the 1991–92 season. The team was the NBA expansion franchise for the 1974–75 season and was called the New Orleans Jazz, as a nod to the city of New Orleans being the birthplace of jazz music. The Jazz moved their base from New Orleans to Salt Lake City on June 8, 1979.
History
On June 7, 1974, the New Orleans Jazz were welcomed as a new expansion franchise into the National Basketball Association (NBA). The initial owner of the team was a group headed by Sam Battistone. Team executives picked the name as a result of its meaning in the dictionary: collective improvisation. The team launched its first season in New Orleans in the 1974–75 season. The team colors were purple, gold, and green.
The first significant move of the team was to trade for star player Pete Maravich (who had played college basketball at LSU) from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for two first-round draft picks, three second-round picks, and one third-round pick for the next three years.
