The NBA is only roughly a month into the season, and already trade rumors are spiking. Teams that are not doing well could be willing to trade a contributor for draft capital. Championship-contending teams are likely dipping their hands into the trade market to get an edge over their rivals. While guards remain in the spotlight, the value of centers who can protect the rim, provide screens and do the dirty work has only increased. Teams with extra frontcourt depth or teams looking to continue their rebuilds could make one or two available for a trade.NBA insider Jake Fischer has the latest on which center could be in the trade market this season.5 NBA centers who could be on the move#5. Jonathan IsaacThe Orlando Magic perhaps have the deepest frontcourt in the NBA. After starter Wendell Carter Jr., coach Jamahl Mosley still has Goga Bitadze, Moritz Wagner and Jonathan Isaac. Mosley can also call on two-way players Colin Castleton and Orlando Robinson.Among Orlando’s big men, Jonathan Isaac is the likeliest trade chip who can give the team its best return. Isaac is an excellent rim protector who has the mobility to shadow perimeter players. NBA teams looking for those kinds of skills could go after him.#4. Jusuf NurkicThe Utah Jazz have two big reasons why they are reportedly listening to calls for Jusuf Nurkic. The NBA veteran is on an expiring contract, and the team already has enough depth at center. Utah seems to be perpetually on a rebuild move, so potentially adding a draft asset is something it covets.Nurkic is averaging 7.5 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Teams looking for a backup center with playoff experience could be interested in him.#3. Robert Williams IIIRobert Williams III is in the same boat as Jusuf Nurkic. The Portland Trail Blazers, already with Donovan Clingan, Yang Hansen and Duop Reath, could trade him. Portland is also looking to get something in return for Williams, who will become an unrestricted free agent. When healthy, Williams is one of the NBA’s best rim protectors and lob targets. He is also an underrated passer who could give championship-contending teams a boost.#2. Nick RichardsIn January 2025, the Phoenix Suns traded for Nick Richards. Five months later, they raided the Charlotte Hornets’ frontline by acquiring Mark Williams. On draft night, they added the 7-foot-1 Khaman Maluach, making Richards dispensable.Richards is averaging 10.3 minutes per game, after hitting 22.7 mpg last season. With less playing time, his contributions have also dropped. With enough minutes, the 7-footer could be a starting center or backup big man for a championship-caliber team. He does not shoot from deep, but he is lengthy, mobile and physical in the paint.#1. Nic ClaxtonThe Brooklyn Nets don’t have enough center depth, and Nic Claxton is on a favorable contract. Still, the Nets have been sellers as they continue rebuilding after the disastrous Kevin Durant-Kyrie Irving era.Claxton is perhaps one of the most underrated NBA centers. He is averaging 14.1 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 4.1 apg and 1.4 bpg. The 6-foot-11 big man can jostle inside the paint or toggle on to perimeter players. Claxton’s passing has given him an edge over the centers on this list.More importantly, Claxton is on a team-friendly deal. He is in the books this season for $25.3 million. Claxton will earn $23.1 million next season before pocketing $20.9 million during the 2027-28 season. At only 26 years old, he is entering the prime years of his career, making him an intriguing addition to rebuilding and championship-contending teams.
