NBA Playoffs Format

Ad

The 2025/26 NBA playoffs will start on 18th April and will go on till May. After‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ the regular season, the first 6 teams from both the Eastern and Western Conferences, ranked based on winning percentage, get the privilege of direct access to the playoffs. The teams that finish from seventh to tenth place will compete in the NBA play-in tournament for the positions of the seventh and eighth ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌seeds.

The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ NBA play-in tournament is regarded as a separate event from the NBA playoffs and thus uses a modified Page playoff format. As per this format, the teams coming seventh and eighth in the league will play a qualification game, the winner of which becomes the seventh seed in the playoffs. At the same time, the teams placed ninth and tenth face each other in an elimination game. The loser is out of the tournament, while the winner goes on to face the loser of the seventh-eight game in the final match to decide the eighth seed in the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌playoffs.

Each‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ round of the playoffs is a best-of-seven elimination series starting off with the First Round, which sees the matchups of seed 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, and seed 4 vs. 5 going head-to-head, respectively. The winner moves to the Conference Semifinals Round, where only 8 teams are left. After that, there is the Conference Finals Round, which features 4 teams, and the NBA Finals, which is a competition between the last two teams.

NBA‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Cup

Thirty ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌teams were split into six groups, three for the East and three for the West, with five teams in each group. Each team plays four games, which are both NBA Cup and regular-season games, once against the other teams in its group.

The six group winners and a wild card from each conference will be the quarterfinals participants, an eight-team knockout round bracket (East vs. East, West vs. West, like the NBA playoffs), where the conferences are separate until the Finals, which is decided by Cup games record and point differential in those games. The knockout stage has single-elimination ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌games.

The four teams will be heading to Las Vegas for the NBA Cup semifinals on Dec. 13 and the Cup Final on Dec. ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌16.
