Charles Oliviera, aka Charles Oliviera da Silva, is a Brazilian MMA fighter, former UFC lightweight champion, and 3rd-degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Charles’ name has components from both his maternal and paternal sides. “Da Silva” is his paternal name. Charles started training in martial arts as a twelve-year-old. He was born into a poor family in Vicente de Carvalho's squalor in Guarujá, São Paulo, Brazil. He wanted to become a professional football player. However, he used to fall ill very often in his childhood. So much so that the doctors treating him declared him paraplegic. However, his parents strong-willed him into various sports programs, and Charles started recovering within two years of doing so. He was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by his neighbor and friend Paulo.

Charles won his first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament in 2003 as a white belt. Later on, he moved on to winning many other tournaments at national and international levels in junior, senior, and professional categories. In 2007, he transitioned to MMA or Mixed Martial Arts and the rest is history. Charles received his Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Ericson Cardoso and Jorge "Macaco" Patino in 2010. Charles is married and has a daughter. He lives near his favela and helps his community through various charities.

Charles Oliveira's language

It is noted that Charles speaks very fast in Portuguese. Hence, after his interviews, a native Brazilian translator is brought in to translate his sentences from Portuguese to English.

Over the years, Charles has made many efforts and attempts to speak in English, especially after his matches, his most notable stint with English being in 2018 after his win over Clay Guida.
