The Brooklyn Nets could shake up their roster soon by trading underrated guard Cam Thomas. The former No. 27 pick in the 2021 NBA draft is under a $6 million qualifying offer. However, he's playing like an All-Star this season, averaging 21.4 points on 35.6% from deep.

Thomas bet on himself over the summer after he did not reach an ideal contract with the franchise. The most the organization offered the star was a two-year, $30 million contract, with a player option in the second year. He was also offered a one-year deal worth $9.5 million, with incentives that would make it $11 million. However, he rejected both offers and settled for the qualifying offer.

On Tuesday, ESPN's Shams Charania reported that Brooklyn could part ways with the guard before he becomes a restricted free agent. League insiders believe that Thomas could command $20 million per season in his next deal. That is, based on how he'll perform.

“Brooklyn could also work with Cam Thomas' agents at Octagon to navigate his future, potentially via trade as he plays the remainder of season on the qualifying offer and will be an RFA next summer. Thomas is averaging 21.4 points but hasn't played since 11/5,” Charania reported.

Thomas has played just eight games this season due to a hamstring injury. His return to the court would help him negotiate his contract next summer. This will also help the Nets attract more suitors in a potential deal involving the scoring guard.

Jordi Fernandez comments on Cam Thomas' role in his looming return to the Nets

Cam Thomas hasn't played a game since Nov. 5. Even with his absence, however, the Nets have done well, developing a tight chemistry centered around Michael Porter Jr. But Thomas could soon return from his injury, and there have been questions about his fit with the team.

Head coach Jordi Fernandez talked about how Thomas will fit in with the team once he's healthy.

“That’s a good question,” Fernandez said. “The context is different [now]. Before Cam got hurt, obviously, his superpower was the ability he had to score. At the same time, we always want to see playmaking efficiency and improvement on defense.

“So all those things were important at the time. Now, he's been out, the team continues to get better and play in a [good] way… The skillset, he’s very unique and very good at what he does. But at the same time, now the group is taking positive steps.

Fernandez said that the most important part will always be the group. The Nets coach said that the task of incorporating Thomas into what they've built will be on him.
