The Dallas Mavericks finally pulled the trigger on Wednesday, firing Nico Harrison from his general manager role. The firing came nine months after the controversial and shocking Luka Doncic trade that brought Anthony Davis to Dallas.

Hours after the news of Harrison's exit broke, the Mavericks are already eyeing executives Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi to take on the role on an interim basis, according to a report by ESPN's Shams Charania.

"The Mavericks and Patrick Dumont have 10:30 am central time meetings to appoint executives Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi to lead basketball operations in interim, sources tell me and Tim MacMahon," he wrote.

Finley has been the Mavericks' Vice President of Basketball Operations since 2021. Before becoming an executive, he was a former two-time NBA All-Star and an NBA champion with the San Antonio Spurs in 2007.

Finley played for the Mavericks for 10 years from 1996 to 2005, having experience playing alongside then-Dallas stars Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki.

Meanwhile, Riccardi has been a veteran in the front office, spending 13 years with the Brooklyn Nets as one of their executives. He was picked up by the Mavericks in 2022 and became a senior director of pro personnel before getting the assistant general manager role a year later.

Harrison was appointed as the Mavericks' general manager in 2021, arranging 16 trades during his time in the role, including the Doncic deal, which is believed to have sealed his fate as the team's GM.

Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont addressed fans after Nico Harrison's firing, citing the team's poor start, which saw them win just three of their first 11 games.

"No one associated with the Mavericks organization is happy with the start of what we all believed would be a promising season," Dumont said in a statement. "You have high expectations for the Mavericks, and I share them with you. When the results don't meet expectations, it's my responsibility to act."
"Though the majority of the 2025-26 season remains to be played, and I know our players are deeply committed to a winning culture, this decision was critical to moving our franchise forward in a positive direction."

He also acknowledged the fans' frustration following the Doncic trade last February.

"I understand the profound impact these difficult last several months have had," he said. "Please know that I'm fully committed to the success of the Mavericks."

The new general managers will be inheriting a promising roster led by rookie Cooper Flagg, who has shown flashes of brilliance despite the team's poor start.
