Jordan is the majority owner of 23XI in NASCAR, a team named after his jersey number in the NBA and three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin's car number. Jordan founded his NASCAR team with Hamlin in 2021. Since then, his team has won nine races in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Why is Michael Jordan's 23XI team suing NASCAR?

Even as a young NBA player, Michael Jordan always believed in fair play and respect in competition within sports. After entering the racing world as an owner, Jordan and his team didn't like how NASCAR was being operated.

According to The Athletic, Jordan's team believed that the racing giant was using its monopoly "to suppress team values and earnings." The Bulls legend has been following NASCAR since he was a child and watched it with his father.

"I love the sport of racing and the passion of our fans but the way NASCAR is run today is unfair to teams, drivers, sponsors and fans," Jordan said in his statement. "Today's action shows I'm willing to fight for a competitive market where everyone wins."

NASCAR is owned by the France family, and it has owned the racing giant since 1948. For Michael Jordan and his team, the big issue came with the "charter" which guarantees financial and other benefits to the racing teams. However, those benefits have an expiration date.

So far, Jordan's team has given up three charters that were worth $120 million. The reports suggest that the team went on to sue NASCAR when they tried to pressure them to sign the "charter" deal.

So far, the judge has already ruled that NASCAR has used its position as a monopoly, which is a positive sign for Jordan and his team.
