The Golden State Warriors are already engaged in trade talks amid an underwhelming 13-14 record after 27 games. While they have reportedly shown interest in Giannis Antetokounmpo, Golden State inquired about a more realistic target in Trey Murphy III.NBA insider Chris Haynes was the first to report on the Warriors reaching out to the New Orleans Pelicans regarding the $112,000,000 small forward. The Pelicans are 5-22, sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. They don't have a pick in 2026, so a losing season won't hold any meaning. They are unlikely to dig themselves out of this hole, given their roster flaws and underwhelming performances from their supposed best players. It would be ideal if they moved on from someone like Trey Murphy III, who has a high trade value. The Warriors are an intriguing trade partner as they can offer a package centered around Jonathan Kuminga, whom the Pelicans have previously shown interest in.Golden State can include its 2026 first-round pick, too. However, it remains to be seen if that would be enough for the Pelicans to bite. If other suitors emerge who can come closer to New Orleans' demands, the Warriors will likely lose out on the Murphy sweepstakes.Warriors Trade Rumors: Trey Murphy III would be a perfect additionThe Warriors might be better off pursuing someone like Trey Murphy III over going all-in on another superstar. The 25-year-old would be an ideal fit alongside Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green due to his scoring ability and connective play. Murphy has averaged 21.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists, shooting 48.9%, including 36.0% from deep. He's a system player who can thrive in organized offensive schemes. Jonathan Kuminga hasn't been able to do that, leading to some of the Warriors' woes this season. Defensively, Murphy may not be an All-Defensive caliber threat, but he can hold his own against talented offensive players. The Warriors don't have such options outside Curry. Butler has been an inconsistent scorer despite being efficient. Murphy can take on that load and ease some pressure off the Warriors' two best offensive players. While the cost could be high, Golden State should look to match it, as it might be the trade that gives them a puncher's chance to challenge the best teams in their conference.
