Victor Wembanyama is considered by most NBA fans and analysts to be a generational talent. Heading into the season, some former players, such as Carmelo Anthony, predicted that Wemby could be the MVP and Defensive Player of the Year winner. The San Antonio Spurs center’s season, though, has been hampered by a calf injury.

Heading into his highly anticipated return against the OKC Thunder on Saturday, Wembanyama agreed to an interview with ESPN. When asked to name the best player in the NBA, the 7-foot-4 center responded:

“I think Jokic is the best offensive player. I don’t think he’s the best player. It’s hard to say. I think it’s between Giannis (Antetokounmpo) and Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander).

Wemby added a line that quickly went viral:

“When I come back on the court, I think it will be me.”

Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Giannis Antetokounmpo have been perennial MVP contenders. Jokic has won the award three times (2021, 2022 and 2024) in the last five seasons. SGA dethroned the Denver Nuggets star in 2025 while Antetokounmpo won his in 2019 and 2020.

This season, Jokic seems to be the early frontrunner to reclaim the Michael Jordan Trophy. “The Joker” is averaging 29.5 points, 12.3 rebounds, 10.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He leads the NBA in rebounds and assists and is the only player averaging a triple-double.

However, Victor Wembanyama seemingly values the two-way impact of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander over Jokic’s offensive brilliance. Antetokounmpo is averaging 28.9 ppg, 10.1 rpg and 6.1 apg. “The Greek Freak” is also easily the Bucks’ best player on defense.

SGA is putting up 32.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 6.5 apg and 1.5 spg. Although he is the MVP, he plays an important role in the OKC Thunder defense, the best in the NBA by a wide margin.

Nikola Jokic has dominated Victor Wembanyama

Nikola Jokic holds a 4-2 record against Victor Wembanyama. The Serbian is averaging 36.8 ppg, 11. 3 rpg and 8.5 assists against the Frenchman. Jokic is making 55.5% of his shots when facing Wemby’s team, per StatMuse.

When Jokic and Wemby faced off on Jan. 4, their last meeting, Jokic dazzled with 46 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds in 43 minutes. The Nuggets center went 19-for-35, including 3-for-8 from behind the arc.

Victor Wembanyama could not play in late November when the Spurs knocked out the Nuggets from the NBA Cup. If both are healthy, they will meet again in mid-March.
