The Golden State Warriors pulled off a 123-91 win over the Chicago Bulls on Sunday, even though Steph Curry and Draymond Green were sidelined. The biggest conversation after the game had nothing to do with the Warriors’ blowout victory. Instead, everyone was talking about the fact that Jonathan Kuminga did not play a single minute.Kuminga sat on the bench the entire night, and it was not due to an injury. Many fans found it unusual, but Steve Kerr brushed off all concerns. He explained that this kind of situation is normal for role players and that he was simply trying out different combinations.“Just got to keep going,” Kerr said. “Just like everybody else who’s in this position. It happens to everybody pretty much, other than the stars. Guys come in and out of the rotation depending on who’s available, how the team’s playing.”“Really wanted to get Gui (in). I think the way Gui has played the last couple of nights, and after what he did down the stretch last year. You see the impact he makes with his energy. And then obviously getting Melt back, and Pat’s emergence. We’ve got a lot of mouths to feed. And this is what we decided to do.”Jonathan Kuminga handled the situation calmly and made it clear there was no frustration toward his coach.“We just switched certain things. That’s all,” Kuminga said.“I’m not really sure (how long it lasts), but as long as things are working out there and we winning, I don’t see the point of switching anything.”As mentioned by Steve Kerr, Gui Santos received significant playing time in Jonathan Kuminga’s place. The Brazilian forward made the most of this opportunity by stuffing the stat sheet with six points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal.Jonathan Kuminga recorded 4 points in his first start after 4 games on the benchAfter the Golden State Warriors played the OKC Thunder on November 11, Jonathan Kuminga was moved to the bench. In the four games where he was part of the second unit, the 23-year-old averaged 7.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists. The numbers were not great, but because the Warriors were extremely shorthanded against the Cleveland Cavaliers on December 7, Kuminga was given another chance to start. Even though the Warriors ended up winning, Kuminga failed to impress. He finished with only four points and shot 1-10 from the field.Jonathan Kuminga has a long road ahead before he can reclaim a permanent spot in the starting lineup. Once everyone is healthy, he will be fighting for minutes at the small forward or power forward spot against players like Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green, Will Richards, Buddy Hield and Moses Moody. On top of that, players like Gui Santos are also making a strong case to be considered for the same position.
