Boston Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla stood on the sidelines when New Orleans Pelicans center DeAndre Jordan opened the second quarter on Monday with a dunk. The play happened after Pelicans point guard Jeremiah Fears drove into the paint to cause chaos. Once Boston collapsed on him, he passed the ball to Jordan, who took his time before dunking over Neemias Queta.

Following a timeout, the Pelicans’ sideline reporter noted what Mazzulla said to his team during the break:

“'DeAndre Jordan was on the street four days ago, and you let him come in here and dunk on you. You cannot pick and choose when you wanna be the best versions of yourselves. You need to bring it every possession.’”

The Celtics were expected to struggle with their rebounding and rim protection now that they are without Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford and Luke Kornet. Porzingis was traded to the Atlanta Hawks while Horford and Kornet took their talents to Golden State and San Antonio via free agency.

Joe Mazzulla now leans on Neemias Queta, who had six starts in 110 games before this season. Mazzulla’s frontcourt was also undersized against the Pelicans. He had 6-foot-8 Josh Minott playing power forward alongside the lanky center. The 7-foot, 265-pound DeAndre Jordan, who signed with the Pelicans on Sunday, outmuscled the Celtics in the paint that dunk.

Queta, though, redeemed himself, earning an excited fist bump from Mazzulla during a fourth-quarter timeout.

Joe Mazzulla guides Celtics to first win of season

Joe Mazzulla’s Celtics opened the season with three straight losses, a situation that has not happened since the 2013-14 campaign, when they went 0-4. Against the New Orleans Pelicans, who did not have Zion Williamson (left bone contusion), the Celtics broke through.

The 122-90 score belied the closely-fought game. Boston led by just 91-86 early in the fourth quarter after Pelicans guard Jordan Poole drained a 3-pointer. The Celtics responded with a blistering 25-2 run behind Sam Hauser and Anfernee Simons.

Simon nailed three triples while Hauser added two. Backup big man Luka Garza joined the fray with seven points, including a 26-footer that sent the pro-Pelicans crowd to the exits.

After a stuttering start where they allowed DeAndre Jordan to easily score his first basket this season, the Cs surged to the finish line. Joe Mazzulla was proud of the way his team closed out the Pelicans on the road.
