Stephen Curry made headlines in early November after ending his 13-year partnership with Under Armour to enter sneaker free agency. While a viral claim suggested he left because the brand didn’t sign Caitlin Clark, a new report now indicates that wasn’t the reason.

Media outlet Sole Retriever shared a post on Instagram on Monday debunking the viral claim, suggesting it was merely a "clickbait."

"Clickbait Debunked: Multiple sources very close to the situation tell Soul Retriver it's "absolutely insane" to suggest that not signing Caitlin Clark was the reason Steph Curry left Under Armour," Soul Retriever reported.

The outlet further debunked viral claims in the post's caption.

On Monday, several outlets, including Bleacher Report, reported that Curry’s exit was linked to Under Armour failing to sign Caitlin Clark. According to their report, Under Armour reportedly offered her a four-year, $16 million deal with a signature shoe, far below Nike’s eight-year, $28 million contract she signed last April.

However, these reports have since been debunked as false. After his announcement on Nov. 13, Curry offered his reasons behind the partnership ending this year.

"Just in the best interest of both parties. The sneaker industry is difficult and like I said, things change over time," Curry said.

Although missing out on Caitlin Clark may have played a minor part, Curry’s departure appears to stem from a much bigger set of issues. Still, despite the partnership ending, Under Armour will continue producing shoes for the Curry Brand through October 2026.

Steph Curry ends his Nike hiatus, wears WNBA star’s shoes against the Utah Jazz

After entering free agency in early November, Curry has been distancing himself from Under Armour. He wore the Kobe 6 “Mambacita” during warmups in San Antonio on Nov. 14 and ended his 12-year Nike hiatus by lacing up Sabrina Ionescu’s shoes against the Jazz on Monday.

The Warriors star drew plenty of attention at Chase Center, hitting the floor in the Nike Sabrina 3s. The moment was even sweeter with Ionescu in the building to watch him drop 31 points in her signature sneaker.

After going head-to-head with Ionescu in last year’s All-Star three-point contest, Curry offered a subtle nod to her by ending his Nike hiatus in style.
