The New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks squared off at the American Airlines Center on Wednesday. Both teams arrived with great desperation to secure wins and rise in the conference standings. New Orleans entered the contest with a 1-6 record while Dallas held a 2-5 record.Both teams made one change to their starting lineups from the previous game. The Pelicans started with Trey Murphy III, Saddiq Bey, Herbert Jones, Kevon Looney and Jeremiah Fears. The Mavericks' starting five comprised Cooper Flagg, D'Angelo Russell, Daniel Gafford, P.J. Washington and Max Christie.The Pelicans landed the first punch and started the game on a 9-0 run, forcing a quick timeout from Dallas coach Jason Kidd after just 3:28 minutes. Max Christie gave the Mavericks their first basket from a made 3-pointer with over eight minutes left in the quarter.Klay Thompson, who dropped to the bench, entered the game with around five minutes left and received loud applause from the Mavericks fans. The veteran forward scored five quick points as the Mavericks entered the second quarter trailing 29-19.P.J. Washington was everywhere on the court in the second quarter, and his individual brilliance helped the Mavericks eat down on the deficit. At one stage in the period, he scored 10 of the Mavericks' last 12 points as Dallas went on a 12-2 run and cut the Pelicans' lead to 42-39 with 3:43 left before halftime.The hosts won the second quarter 30-23 and entered the break trailing 52-49. Washington (11) and Saddiq Bey (10) were the only players to crack double digits in points by half time.The Mavericks made a 9-0 run in the third quarter and took the lead for the first time. Max Christie made it 61-57 with 7:51 left in the third quarter after Russell delivered a slick pass on a dime for his former Lakers teammate. Saddiq Bey and Jose Alvarado's red-hot 3-point shooting helped the Pelicans regain the lead, and the visitors entered the final period leading 78-77.The game went down to the wire in the final quarter as the Pelicans held their nerve in the clutch and outplayed the Mavericks.
