The latest NBA trade rumors suggest that the Minnesota Timberwolves are interested in Dallas Mavericks' star Kyrie Irving, with Anthony Edwards advocating for the move. The Timberwolves have a massive void at the point guard position. Mike Conley has been demoted to a bench role and isn't getting any younger at 38.
Meanwhile, Donte DiVincenzo has been great, but he's not a natural point guard who can be relied upon to handle the ball. The Timberwolves have widely been rumored to be interested in Ja Morant, but the star guard and the Memphis Grizzlies have maintained a desire to work things out.
Amid the fading possibility of Morant landing in Minnesota, the team is reportedly eyeing Irving, according to insider Brandon "Scoop B" Robinson. Here's what he mentioned in his report on Thursday:
"A well-placed and respected NBA fixture shared a belief that Irving, when healthy, would be the missing piece for Minnesota. The fixture told me that “Irving in Minnesota makes the Timberwolves a contender” and that the combination of Anthony Edwards and Kyrie Irving is potent enough for the team to legitimately contend in the West.

"Crucially, they also shared that Anthony Edwards himself is advocating for the move."
Kyrie Irving would also bring a wealth of playoff experience as a former NBA champion and multi-time finalist. He would be coming off an ACL surgery at 33, so his market value will presumably be on the lower side. If the Mavericks do look to trade him, it would significantly help Minnesota.
NBA Trade Rumors: Do Mavericks Want to Trade Kyrie Irving?
The Dallas Mavericks might end up in the lottery again. They are 11th in the West with a 9-16 record and Kyrie Irving has yet to make his debut. Anthony Davis has been injury-prone, so the likelihood of Dallas returning to the playoffs seems bleak.
It might lead the Mavericks to rebuild around No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg and another lottery pick next year. Irving would be an ideal trade candidate alongside Anthony Davis in such a situation.
However, Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix has ruled out that possibility. During an appearance on The Ryen Russillo Show, the insider reported that the Mavericks want Irving on the roster to maximize Flagg's potential.
"They don't want to deal Kyrie Irving," Mannix said. "They think Cooper Flagg needs to play next to an elite point guard to develop him the right way."
As mentioned above, Irving's value might not be as high. He's an aging star coming off an ACL surgery, so the Mavericks might be better off keeping him long term for his serviceable on-court production and locker room leadership.
