Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was arrested on Thursday for allegations of participating in illegal gambling. Billups' attorney, Chris Heywood, made a statement immediately after his client's arrest, mentioning that the Blazers coach plans on fighting back against the FBI's charges.

While illegal gambling is a common practice in sports, it was who Billups was associated with that made the crime more severe. According to reports, the Blazers coach gambled with members and associates of the La Cosa Nostra organized crime families.

On top of who he was involved with, Billups is also being charged with wire fraud and money laundering. However, it's worth noting that his charges at the moment are federal conspiracies. Meaning to say, there's a chance that Billups could dodge a bullet if proven innocent.

"Anyone who knows Chauncey Billups knows he is a man of integrity; men of integrity do not cheat and defraud others," Heywood wrote to ESPN. "To believe that he did what the federal government is accusing him of is to believe that he would risk his Hall-of-Fame legacy, his reputation, and his freedom."

"Chauncey Billups has never backed down," Heywood continued in his statement. "He does not plan to do so now. He will fight these allegations with the same tenacity that marked his 28-year career. We look forward to our day in court."

Trail Blazers narrowly lose to Timberwolves hours before Chauncey Billups' arrest

The Portland Trail Blazers took on the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday. Despite their best efforts to start the season strong, Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves came up with a narrow 118-114 victory. Unfortunately for the Blazers, Edwards had a monster opening night.

Looking at Ant's numbers, his shots were falling no matter where he took them from. Edwards added 41 points and seven rebounds while shooting an efficient 50% from beyond the arc and in the field overall.

Trying to keep the game within reach for the Blazers were Jerami Grant and Deni Avdija. Grant scored 29 points while Avdija added 20 points and seven rebounds. Sad to say, they came up short and started their season with a loss. To add insult to injury, their head coach, Chauncey Billups, was arrested shortly after the game.
