Amid a dismal start to the season, Dallas Mavericks star Klay Thompson has been a subject of several trade speculations. Latest intel from NBA insider Shams Charania said that the four-time champion prefers to play for a winning team.

"Teams across the league know Thompson prefers to be part of a contender over the remaining two years of his three-year, $50 million deal," Charania wrote.

On Dec. 1, Bleacher Report's Greg Swartz proposed a three-team trade, which would send Thompson to the LA Lakers. Dallas would get LaMelo Ball, and the Charlotte Hornets would land a package headlined by Rui Hachimura and Dalton Knecht.

Given Charania's report on Tuesday about Thompson's preference for a winning situation, Swartz's trade proposal would interest the Mavericks star. The Lakers are No. 2 in the Western Conference with a 17-6 record. Dallas, meanwhile, is at 11th with a 9-16 record.

Klay Thompson will also reunite with Luka Doncic in LA. When Thompson signed with Dallas in July 2024, Charania said he was "sold" on competing alongside Doncic, who just led the team to the NBA Finals. Thompson would provide a veteran presence and a 3-point shooting threat for the Lakers.

In 23 games, Klay Thompson is averaging a career-low 11.0 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists on 36.6% shooting, including 35.4% from 3-point range.

Klay Thompson's teammates might also be available in trade discussions

According to ESPN's Shams Charania on Tuesday, the Dallas Mavericks are "open to exploring the trade markets" for role players Daniel Gafford and D'Angelo Russell. This means that trade discussions might extend beyond stars Klay Thompson and Anthony Davis, who will reportedly be targets for several teams.

Per Charania, Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont has indicated that he wants the front office to evaluate the roster as much as possible. While league sources say the team will take a "patient approach," rival teams are reportedly keeping a close eye on possible moves.

"Teams are already preparing for conversations with the Mavericks at the deadline, and those talks could create significant decisions leaguewide," Charania wrote.

Following the firing of Nico Harrison, Dallas named Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi as interim co-general managers. Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban also has an input on front office decisions.
