Lenny Wilkens, a former Seattle SuperSonics great and legendary head coach, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 10, at the age of 88. Wilkens was an iconic figure for players and coaches, including Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who paid tribute to Wilkens. Kerr described Wilkens as an "unbelievable man," whom he looked up to when he was still a player. “He was an unbelievable man. Just an incredible man," Kerr said before revealing one of his fondest memories of Wilkens. "He joined a scrimmage when a bunch of guys were injured...He jumped into this scrimmage, and he can still play. He is the only guy I know who is a Hall of Fame player and Hall of Fame coach."Wilkens served as Kerr's coach early in his career from 1990 to 1992, before he was traded to the Orlando Magic in 1993. Kerr went on to win three NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls from 1996 to 1998. Wilkens mentored the SuperSonics to the 1979 NBA title, the team's only crown before the franchise moved to OKC. As a player, he was a nine-time All-Star, playing with the St. Louis Hawks, SuperSonics, Cavaliers, and the Portland Trail Blazers, but did not win a championship. He is also the only man on the NBA's 75 Greatest Players and coaches list released in its 75th season. Wilkens was also inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame three times as a player, coach, and as part of the 1992 Dream Team. His career can be compared to Kerr, who also went on a successful coaching career, winning four titles as head coach of the Warriors.
