LeBron James made his highly anticipated debut in the 2025-2026 season on Tuesday, and had a clear message for any naysayer who doubts his fit with the team. After helping the LA Lakers clinch a 140-126 win against the Utah Jazz, he reiterated that he can play with any group of teammates.
"I said at yesterday's practice, I can fit in with anybody,” James told reporters in the postgame interview. “I don't even understand why that was even a question. What's wrong with these people out here? I can fit in right away with anybody.”
The day before, during practice, James was asked several questions about how he would find his rhythm. The Lakers roster looks different compared to when he last stepped on the court, with new names like Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, and Jake LaRavia joining the team.

Reporters brought up the idea that chemistry might take some time since he has not had much practice with them. However, James did not seem concerned at all.
“For me, just seeing ways I can fit in organically. Right off the top, I know ways I can help this team right away when I am put back in the lineup.”
LeBron James’ confidence showed in his performance. He finished with 11 points on 4-7 FG. But more importantly, he dished out 12 assists, proving he could instantly blend in with Luka Doncic and the rest of the team while making an immediate impact on the court.
LeBron James speaks about missing first month of season
The LA Lakers suffered a major blow when LeBron James was diagnosed with sciatica, a painful issue affecting his lower back and running down the right side of his body. The injury kept him out for the entire preseason and the opening 14 games of the regular season.
Forced to support his teammates from the bench, James admitted the stretch was one of the toughest of his career.
“It's been rough mentally for me. This the first time I started a basketball season and not played since I've started playing basketball at 9 years old. I've never missed the beginning of a basketball season.”
Even with LeBron James sidelined, JJ Redick’s team dominated their competition. Co-led by the backcourt duo of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, the Lakers won 10 of their first 14 games and were placed fourth in the Western Conference standings.
