LeBron James made a big deal out of being able to play with his eldest son Bronny in the NBA. The commitment of his second child Bryce to Arizona set the table for another father-son combination in 2026, but now, that unique opportunity is in jeopardy.

Via its SportsCenter NEXT account on X, ESPN reported Tuesday that Wildcats head coach Tommy Lloyd has floated the possibility of Bryce having a redshirt year. This is a move that would impact the 18-year-old's timetable of entering the NBA Draft.

"Redshirting is on the table," SportsCenter NEXT quoted Lloyd as saying. "I want Bryce to have the best college basketball career, the most options in his college basketball career."

Another report by Bryan Kalbrosky of USA Today clarified that this would be a "non-medical redshirt season," meaning that Bryce would not be sitting out due to injury. From the looks of it, Lloyd's proposed redshirt year is simply to give the second-generation athlete a chance to have more minutes further down the line in his college career.

No matter what Lloyd's intentions are, a redshirt year could lead Bryce to prolong his stay in college. This might mean that he would not be throwing his hat in the 2026 NBA Draft.

All eyes, then, would be on his father LeBron, who is set to play his 23rd season in the NBA. With the reports of Bryce possibly redshirting, it seems that the soonest LBJ would be able to play with him in the NBA is the 2027-28 season. The question is whether James would still be around to play a 25th NBA campaign.

LeBron James ramps up preparations for return by playing in G League

In his USA Today report, Kalbrosky pointed out the parallel between Bryce and LeBron, in that both of them have yet to play this basketball season.

It appears that the LA Lakers superstar isn't far off from his 2025-26 debut, as ESPN's Shams Charania has reported a key update regarding James' comeback.

"Lakers' LeBron James was assigned to the franchise's NBA G League affiliate, South Bay, today and will participate in his first full practice of the season, including 5-on-5 play, as he works toward a debut," Charania tweeted on Wednesday.

This G League assignment establishes another connection between James and his offspring, as Bryce has spent plenty of time honing his craft with the South Bay Lakers.
