The LA Lakers have a competitive group around LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. However, longtime NBA commentator Bill Simmons believes the group can be improved. The team is in an ideal situation in the West, with a 17-6 record and tied in second place with the Denver Nuggets. The team could use more 3-and-D wing players on its roster. Since the only productive wingman on defense is Rui Hachimura, adding another player would be helpful. Simmons suggested LA should try to trade for New Orleans Pelicans forward Herb Jones. The sports commentator dubbed his proposal "easy" and something the team should make. “I would trade Herb Jones right now. The contract he’s at, literally what the Lakers need,” Simmons said. “And it’s easy, Knecht, Kleber, and a 2031 first. Call it in.”Jones brings a lot to the table for the Pelicans this season. He's appeared in 17 games, averaging 9.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists. He became well-known for his exceptional defense throughout the 2023–2024 campaign. He finished fifth in the Defensive Player of the Year voting that season. The Lakers could use a productive two-way player like Jones. Aside from his defense, the 6-foot-7 forward is a reliable outside shooter. In his career, he has knocked down 36.4% of his 3-pointers.While it's a beneficial trade for LA, the question lies in New Orleans. Are they willing to let Jones go for Simmons' proposal of Dalton Knecht, Maxi Kleber and a first-round pick? The Lakers are linked to another 3-and-D player in the WestThe Lakers have covered mostly what they need. They have a reliable scorer in Luka Doncic, a productive second option in Austin Reaves and an experienced third option in LeBron James. At the center, LA has a decent player in Deandre Ayton.Adding another 3-and-D player will further improve the roster. Aside from Herb Jones, the team has been linked to another Western Conference player: Keon Ellis. According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Sacramento Kings could explore selling their roster.Ellis is one of the players whom Amick said won't have trouble finding suitors. “Keon Ellis is — probably market-wise, who they’re gonna have no problem finding suitors for,” Amick said (Timestamp: 8:59). “The Lakers are looking for a 3-and-D type guy. Could it be Keon? Could it be Herb Jones? Somebody like that.”Keon Ellis hasn't been productive for the Kings this season. He's appeared in 23 games, averaging 5.2 points and 1.3 rebounds on 39.2% shooting from beyond the arc. Ellis could still be effective for LA, since he's proven to be a reliable threat from deep.
