The LA Lakers and OKC Thunder crossed swords in a box-office regular-season game at the Paycom Center on Wednesday. The Purple and Gold came into the matchup with an 8-3 record, holding the fourth spot in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, the defending champions entered at 11-1, firmly perched atop the league standings. The Lakers fielded the same starting lineup from the previous game, with Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton taking the floor first. On the contrary, the Thunder began with a lineup comprising Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, Cason Wallace, Ajay Mitchell and Isaiah Hartenstein. The Lakers' offense struggled against the suffocating OKC defense in the first quarter. The Thunder applied intense ball pressure, a level that the Lakers hadn't experienced this season. The Lakers struggled early, missing nine of their first 15 shots and turning the ball over four times, which left them trailing 22-14.The Thunder closed the quarter strongly, forcing two more turnovers from the Lakers and keeping them to just eight shot makes in the quarter. As a result, OKC entered the second period with a 30-18 lead. The Purple and Gold completely fell apart in the second quarter, heading into the break trailing 70-38. By halftime, the Lakers had 11 turnovers to OKC's just one. The Thunder flexed their championship pedigree and won the second quarter by a margin of 40-20.Everything that could go wrong did for the Lakers. Costly turnovers, cold shooting and missed free throws plagued their performance, resulting in an embarrassing first-half showing. It marked their lowest-scoring opening half of the season, with Luka Doncic standing as the lone player in double figures with 11 points. The Lakers played much better in the third quarter, but failed to cut down the deficit. Isaiah Joe knocked down a 3-pointer to close the period, which gave the Thunder a 100-64 lead heading into the final frame. The fourth quarter felt like a mere formality, with the outcome already decided after three quarters of play. The Lakers won the final period 28-21, but fell to a 121-92 loss on the road.
