The LA Lakers listed two players on the injury report ahead of their blockbuster NBA Cup showdown against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday. Huge concerns emerged about Marcus Smart, as the former Defensive Player of the Year was listed as out due to back spasms.

Smart suited up in the previous game against the LA Clippers on Tuesday and delivered another superb performance off the bench. In 20 minutes, the former Boston Celtics guard scored seven points on an efficient 3 of 5 shooting, including 1 of 1 from 3-point range. He also recorded three rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block.

Smart has made a huge difference for the Purple and Gold since signing a two-year contract in the offseason. The veteran guard has fueled the team with his infectious energy and leadership, while playing a significant role on both ends of the floor.

Meanwhile, Deandre Ayton's status was upgraded to probable after the Lakers center missed the previous game with a right knee contusion. He sustained the injury during the game against the Utah Jazz on Sunday and missed the entire second half. In Ayton's absence, Jaxson Hayes was promoted to the starting lineup.

The Lakers are currently riding a five-game win streak, sitting comfortably in second place in the Western Conference standings with a 13-4 record. The Purple and Gold have also qualified for the NBA Cup quarterfinals by winning all three in-season tournament games.
