The freshman guard was stellar in his highly anticipated debut, recording 15 points, three rebounds and three assists, shooting 6-for-10, in 29 minutes off the bench. Anthony's strong performance helped Syracuse grab its first win of the season, defeating Binghamton 85-47.

After the game, La La Anthony, who was in the crowd cheering for her son, flooded her Instagram stories with pictures and moments from before and after the contest.

“First official game of the season! Let’s goooo Syracuse! Let’s goo @kiyananthony🍊,” she wrote. “Time really does fly but I'm just so proud of him and his hard work.”

Nineteen years after his father, Carmelo Anthony, made his debut for Syracuse, Kiyan is firmly following in his footsteps. The NBA legend is celebrated by the university for bringing the program its only NCAA title during his freshman season in 2003.

“Definitely overwhelming”: Kiyan Anthony on following Carmelo Anthony’s footsteps at Syracuse

While Kiyan Anthony was solid in his debut for his father's alma mater, the freshman guard has a long way to go to live up to his father's legacy at Syracuse. And Anthony discussed the immenseness of the task he has taken up.

“It’s definitely overwhelming,” Anthony told The Daily Orange. “I’m not even gonna lie and sit here like it’s a bed of roses. It’s definitely a lot of pressure.”

Carmelo Anthony played 35 games for Syracuse, averaging 22.2 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Even if Anthony catches up to his father in college, he'll be faced with another daunting task in the NBA.

Following a 17-season pro career, Carmelo retired while being widely regarded as one of the best scorers in basketball, inducted into the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame. For now, Kiyan Anthony will be focused on returning to action when Syracuse faces the Delaware State Hornets on Saturday.
