Jalen Green was one of the key pieces for the Houston Rockets as they made the first round of the playoffs last season. However, after a lackluster playoff display where he averaged just 13.3 points across seven games on 37.2% shooting, questions were raised about his future with the team.

Those questions were quickly answered in the summer as he was moved to the Phoenix Suns in a historic seven-team trade that saw the Rockets land Kevin Durant.

Despite his struggles in the postseason, Green has the potential to win games on his own. He hasn’t been able to help the Suns yet as he recovers from a right hamstring strain that he suffered in the preseason.

After being listed as out for Phoenix’s opening four games, Jalen Green was upgraded to questionable for Wednesday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies. The questionable tag implies we will get a clearer picture of his availability after morning shootaround or just before tipoff.

If Green is unable to play Wednesday, his next opportunity to make his Suns debut will come Friday in a home game against the Utah Jazz.

Green featured in all 82 regular-season games last season, averaging 21.0 points on 42.3% shooting. He also played all 82 games the previous year. The most games he has missed came in his rookie season in 2021-22, when he played just 67 games.

How have Phoenix Suns fared in Jalen Green’s absence?

The Suns haven’t had the best of starts. After starting the season strong with a 120-116 win against the Sacramento Kings, they have dropped three straight games, the latest being Monday's 138-134 overtime loss to the Utah Jazz.

Devin Booker had a double-double of 34 points and 10 assists, while Grayson Allen had 23 points. Phoenix was expected to struggle this season after moving on from Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, and that seems to be the case.

While Jalen Green isn’t expected to carry the team over the hump, he can be a secondary scoring option next to Booker. When healthy, the two can combine to form one of the most fearsome scoring duos in the league.

However, Green needs to focus on his defensive game and refine his shot selection to take the next step and become an All-Star talent. He possesses the necessary skills, and it’s now just a matter of persevering to improve with experience.
