The Dallas Mavericks fired Nico Harrison as the team's general manager on Tuesday, just nine months after the Luka Doncic trade in February. Harrison's comments about his job safety resurfaced on social media after the Mavs decided to part ways with him.
At the end of the 2024-25 NBA season, Harrison faced the media on camera for the first time since trading Doncic to the LA Lakers. One reporter asked the then-general manager why the Mavericks' ownership shouldn't fire him from his position.
Harrison was confident enough to say that he did a good job, despite the extreme backlash and criticism over his bold decision to trade a player like Doncic, who was just entering his prime.
"I think I've done a really good job here," Harrison said. "I don't think I can be judged by the injuries this year. You have to judge the totality, from beginning to end, and so, I think I have a really good working relationship with Patrick (Dumont). I think you had in Rick (Welts), the leadership that we have is really elite. You'll see next year when our team comes back, we're going to be competing for a championship."

In addition to the criticism of trading Luka Doncic in his prime, Nico Harrison was also called out for not opening negotiations to other teams besides the LA Lakers. The Dallas Mavericks could have received a significantly better package, as well as a haul of draft assets, for a generational talent.
Anthony Davis has played in only 14 games since the trade, with Kyrie Irving still out with a knee injury. Klay Thompson has struggled with his shot, while Cooper Flagg starting at point guard has affected the start of his career.
The Mavericks were 3-8 at the time of Harrison's firing, while Doncic has led the Lakers to an 8-3 record. "Luka Magic" is also averaging 37.1 points, 9.4 rebounds, 9.1 assists and 1.7 steals per game.
Who will replace Nico Harrison as Mavs GM?

The next question for the Dallas Mavericks after firing Nico Harrison is who might replace him as general manager. The Mavericks announced that Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi will serve as interim co-general managers as the franchise seeks a permanent replacement.
The next Mavs GM has the tall task of rebuilding around Cooper Flagg. Anthony Davis still has value, but his injury history could make him difficult to trade. Kyrie Irving just signed an extension, though he's a popular locker room figure in Dallas.
