The Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Golden State Warriors 99-98 on Thursday at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.

Tyrese Maxey led the Sixers with 35 points on 13-for-27 shooting, including 4-for-10 from 3-point range. Quentin Grimes had 12 points, five rebounds and six assists. Joel Embiid finished with 12 points and six rebounds on 5-for-13 shooting. VJ Edgecombe added 10 points, six rebounds and five assists, including the game-winning putback.

Pat Spencer led the Warriors with 16 points, four rebounds and four assists on 5-for-8 shooting, including 2-for-3 from 3-point range off the bench. Moses Moody, De'Anthony Melton and Buddy Hield each scored 14 points. Quinten Post added 10 points and four assists off the bench.

With the win, the Sixers earned their second straight victory to improve to 12-9. The Warriors (11-12), meanwhile, are now on a two-game losing skid. They were without Steph Curry (left quad contusion and muscle strain) and Jimmy Butler (knee soreness) on Thursday.

The game was also the first of two meetings between Golden State and Philadelphia this season. They next face each other on Feb. 3 in San Francisco.

Golden State Warriors vs. Philadelphia 76ers game summary

The Philadelphia 76ers raced to a 30-10 lead over the Golden State Warriors at the end of the opening quarter. The Warriors went 4-for-25 (16%), including 2-for-16 from 3-point range (12.5%) in the quarter. Tyrese Maxey led the Sixers with 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting in the period.

Philadelphia maintained its lead in the second quarter. At halftime, the Sixers led 56-34. Maxey scored 18 points in the first half to lead Philadelphia. VJ Edgecombe added eight points.

Moses Moody led Golden State in the first half with eight points, while Jonathan Kuminga had seven points off the bench.

The Sixers increased their lead to as many as 24 in the third period. Golden State outscored Philadelphia 32-24 in the quarter to trim the lead to 14 (80-66) heading into the final frame.

The Sixers scored the first four points of the fourth quarter. The Warriors then went on a 15-0 run to cut the lead to three (84-81) midway through the period. Golden State reclaimed the lead (93-92) on Gui Santos' cutting layup. Down the stretch, Pat Spencer drilled a 3-pointer to give the Warriors a 98-94 lead with 1:12 left.

With 8.2 seconds remaining and Golden State leading 98-97, the Sixers had an opportunity to win the game. Maxey missed a mid-range jumper, but Edgecombe was there for the putback layup.

Philadelphia will next face the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday in the second game of a back-to-back. Meanwhile, Golden State will return to action on Saturday to face the Cleveland Cavaliers.
