NBA insider Shams Charania reported on Monday that Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham had signed a six-year extension with Nike. The deal includes a signature shot that is expected to be released in 2017. Cunningham confirmed the report during his appearance on Kevin Durant's “Boardroom” podcast on Tuesday.Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas commented on what Cunningham’s deal could mean to the Pistons in his podcast on Wednesday:“People are gonna hate that I am going to say it. If you are a Pistons fan, you should be worried. … Nike is the sponsor of the NBA. Nike has its own agenda. And I am pretty sure Cade (Cunningham) staying in Detroit isn't a part of their agenda."According to Arenas, Nike, valued at $92.5 billion by Forbes, is looking at the 24-year-old guard as the brand’s emerging star. Arenas added that the mantle used to be with the controversial Ja Morant, but he implied Cunningham would take the role moving forward.Cade Cunningham joins Morant, Durant, Devin Booker, Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron James in the list of NBA players with Nike signature shoes. Among the six, Cunningham, Morant (Memphis) and Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee) are playing for small-market teams. Morant has been with the Grizzlies for seven seasons, while Antetokounmpo has not played for another team since the Bucks drafted him in 2013.Morant and Antetokounmpo have had signature shoes with Nike while playing for small-market teams. Only time will tell if Gilbert Arenas’ prediction for Cade Cunningham will come true.Gilbert Arenas sees only one situation where Cade Cunningham remains with PistonsCade Cunningham signed a five-year, $269.09 million rookie extension with the Detroit Pistons in July 2024. This season, the first year of that contract, he is in the books for $46.3 million. The deal made him the Pistons’ franchise cornerstone. But because of the deal with Nike, Gilbert Arenas sees only one situation where Cunningham stays in Detroit:“As long as he’s winning championships in Detroit and winning at a high level, Nike is cool with him staying there. When they start having down years, (Nike) will move that product to a big company.”Arenas added that Cunningham is a shoo-in for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, making the All-Star guard’s value increase even more. He predicts the brand will influence Cunningham to force his way out of Detroit if the Pistons start losing. The Pistons sit atop the Eastern Conference with a 13-2 record. With a young core built around Cade Cunningham, many believe they will remain a conference powerhouse. Cunningham's contract and how the Pistons have been doing almost guarantees the star guard isn't going anywhere.
