NBA insider Brian Windhorst said on Wednesday, via ESPN Cleveland, that Giannis Antetokounmpo wanted out of Milwaukee before the 2025-26 season started. According to Windhorst, the Bucks “called the New York Knicks” about a trade package for the two-time MVP, who wanted to be a Knick.

Bucks coach Doc Rivers addressed the rumors heading into his team’s game against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday.

“Here we go again. There have been no conversations. I want to make it clear for, I would say, one more time, but for the 50th time, it clearly is not getting to one network. … Giannis (Antetokounmpo) has never asked to be traded. Ever. I can't make that more clear."

Brian Windhorst’s comments came after ESPN colleague Shams Charania reported that Giannis Antetokounmpo is discussing his future with the team. Charania added that “a resolution is expected in the coming weeks” after Antetokounmpo’s talks with the front office.

The Antetokounmpo trade rumors have been going on over the past few years. In October, Charania reported that Bucks general manager Jon Horst went to Greece for a “seminal and candid meeting” with the nine-time All-Star. According to Charania, the two-time MVP “aired his concerns about whether the team could achieve championship contention.”

Giannis Antetokounmpo decided to stay, a reason the Bucks reportedly brought back his brother Thanasis Antetokounmpo for a one-year, $2.9 million deal.

Loss to Wizards on Monday re-ignited Giannis Antetokounmpo trade rumors

The Milwaukee Bucks are 1-5 without Giannis Antetokounmpo, but they are also 9-8 with him. Predicted to be an Eastern Conference contender, the Bucks sit at No. 11 with a 9-13 record. Monday’s 129-126 loss to the Washington Wizards was arguably their worst and most embarrassing this season.

The Wizards, the cellar dwellers in the East with a 3-17 record, trailed by 16 points in the third quarter. Instead of quitting, they steadily cut Milwaukee’s lead. Halfway through the fourth frame, what looked like a comfortable win for the Bucks became a dogfight.

Former Bucks star Khris Middleton nailed a 28-footer to give the Wizards a 124-122 lead. Antetokounmpo went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line before CJ McCollum pushed Washington’s advantage to 127-123 following a 3-pointer with 15.0 seconds remaining. The Bucks committed a turnover in the next possession, an error that led to a Bilal Coulibaly dunk.

Giannis Antetokounmpo scrubbed his Instagram account of Bucks-related photos after the loss, a move that re-ignited trade rumors.
