Stephen A. Smith made a big prediction about Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe leading the Sixers' backcourt. There was not much hope from the team before the season started, but the wind started to shift after Maxey and Edgecombe's Tsunami in the season-opener against the Boston Celtics.

The Sixers' rookie (34 pts) and Maxey combined for 74 points against the Celtics. There were still questions regarding the sustainability of Edgecombe's performance in the future. But after the Sixers' 4-0 start, he has shown his reliability on both ends.

On Wednesday, when Smith appeared on ESPN's First Take, he made a bold prediction about the backcourt duo of Maxey and Edgecombe.

"I watched Tyrese Maxey, who is a stud, with that brother V.J. Edgecombe...these brothers are box office. And I' telling you something right now, if not this year, by the end of next season, I believe there is a legitimate argument that we'll be seeing that the Philadelphia 76ers have the best backcourt in the entire National Basketball Association," Smith said.

Smith also made another big claim about the Sixers' title chances in the future.

"Let me tell you something right now. God help the basketball world if these two brothers...keep looking the way they look, and a miracle happens and Joel Embiid gets healthy. ...if that happens, they could contend for the title."

Through four games, V.J. Edgecombe is averaging 22.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

Sixers rookie V.J. Edgecombe made a historic NBA debut

V.J. Edgecombe's NBA debut seemed like the light at the end of the tunnel for the Philadelphia 76ers. With Joel Embiid's continuous struggle with injury, Edgecombe's potential was the ray of hope for a better future.

Edgecombe scored 34 points in his debut game against the Boston Celtics. It was the third most points scored in a debut game in NBA history, only behind Wilt Chamberlain's 43 points in 1959 and Frank Selvy's 35 points in 1954.

Moreover, he broke LeBron James' 12-point debut game first-quarter record. Edgecombe torched the Celtics' defense with 14 points. The Sixers rookie is also the first player to score at least 30 points in a debut game with five 3-pointers.

While Edgecombe's stellar performance shocked the NBA world, his coach, Nick Nurse, was not surprised at all.

"It's not that surprising to me. I think he's this good. I thought it right away," Nurse said after the game.

Edgecombe is not just an athletic 20-year-old rookie. He plays extremely hard on both ends and has excellent court vision.
