BYU star AJ Dybantsa called Kevin Durant his “all-time favorite player” during an interview with “Boardroom Talks” in October. Dybantsa added that he watched “too much” of KD because the former NBA MVP was “easy buckets.” The 18-year-old forward has even copied Durant’s hesitation pull-up jumper as one of his go-to moves.

On Wednesday, Dybantsa etched his name into Big 12 history with his eighth straight game with at least 15 points to start his collegiate basketball career. He now has one more than his boyhood idol. Former Oklahoma star guard Trae Young holds the record with 26 consecutive games.

AJ Dybantsa tweeted after making history:

“Following greatness @KDTrey5.”

Kevin Durant opened his collegiate career at Texas with seven straight games with at least 20 points. His streak ended when he finished with 10 points despite playing 43 minutes in the Longhorns’ 76-75 loss to Louisiana State on Dec. 16, 2006.

Meanwhile, AJ Dybantsa hasn’t scored less than 15 points in seven consecutive games. He started his career at BYU with a 21-point night against Villanova on Nov. 4. Against the California Baptist Lancers on Wednesday, the streak continued after finishing with 22 points.

AJ Dybantsa raved about Kevin Durant’s efficiency during workout

AJ Dybantsa sat down with Rich Kleiman, Kevin Durant’s business partner and manager, in October for an exclusive talk with “Board TV.” The 6-foot-9 forward opened up about choosing BYU over traditional collegiate basketball powerhouses. Dybantsa also shared that he spent time working out with the Houston Rockets superstar.

When asked what it was like to train with Durant, the potential No. 1 pick of the 2026 NBA draft responded:

“It just forces you to make shots. When I was in the workout, I’m like, ‘Bro, I can’t miss.’ I was focused on every follow-through. He made like 90% of his shots. … I probably made like 70, 80%.”

Kevin Durant’s efficiency has translated well into the NBA, where he is a career 50.2% shooter, including 39.0% from deep. Dybantsa is keeping in step while playing for the Cougars. He is making 54.4% of his shots, including 35.0% from behind the arc.
