Former NBA coach Stan Van Gundy has made some interesting comments over the past few days. On Wednesday, he said on “The Zach Lowe” show that Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic “might be the best player in the history of the NBA.” Two days later, he added another comment that quickly went viral.

During Friday’s game between the New York Knicks and the Milwaukee Bucks, the Amazon Prime Video analyst told anchor Ian Eagle:

“I think the only two guys in the league better than Josh Hart coast to coast are Giannis (Antetokounmpo) and LeBron (James).
"I had (Hart) in New Orleans and didn't play him enough. … One of the reasons I'm sitting next to you.”

Both Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron James are freaks of nature who are known for their nearly unstoppable fastbreak attacks. They are among the usual leaders in fastbreak points per game, something Josh Hart has not done in his career.

This season, James (7.7 ppg) and Antetokounmpo (6.5 ppg) are ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in transtion points, per NBA stats. Hart's 2.2 ppg is tied with Denver's Cameron Johnson for 93rd. Why Stan Van Gundy lumped the Knicks' forward with James and Antetokounmpo is anybody's guess.

Van Gundy coached the Pelicans for only one season (2020-21). Among Josh Hart’s teammates that season were Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Jaxson Hayes, Steven Adams, Isaiah Thomas and Zion Williamson.

NBA insider Jake Fischer explained in June 2021 why the Pelicans parted ways with Stan Van Gundy:

“Van Gundy's coaching and communication style never seemed to find its footing with Pelicans players and staffers.”

Josh Hart did not last long in New Orleans, either. In February 2022, the Pelicans shipped him to Portland as part of the package to acquire CJ McCollum.

Josh Hart said he did not have “open” communication with Stan Van Gundy

New York Knicks coach Mike Brown has started to trust Josh Hart more as the season progresses. From averaging 22.3 minutes per game, he is averaging 28.9 mpg. Since OG Anunoby went down with an injury roughly two weeks ago, his minutes have jumped to 34.2 mpg.

Hart told Newsday’s Steve Popper that he is an “acquired taste” and reacted to his increased playing time:

“I think it just shows the respect level that they have of myself and the input that I’m able to have. Every coach that I’ve played with, except for Stan Van Gundy, had an open line of communication."

Popper’s report came a few hours before Stan Van Gundy commented on Josh Hart’s value as a coast-to-coast force.
