Why does Dom call Rhea Ripley Mami?

Dominik Mysterio is an American professional wrestler and the son of WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio. He first appeared on WWE television when he was six, standing ringside to support his father. He was also part of the storyline between Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero. Dominik began his wrestling career in 2019. He and Rey made history by becoming the first father-and-son duo to win the SmackDown Tag Team Championship. Later, Dominik joined The Judgment Day and faced his father in a match at WrestleMania 39, which marked only the second father vs. son match in WrestleMania history. He has held the NXT North American Championship twice and built a strong presence as a heel in WWE.

Rhea Ripley is an Australian Professional Wrestler. She has won the NXT UK Women’s Championship, NXT Women’s Championship, WWE Raw Women’s Championship, WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship/ Women’s World Championship, and WWE Women's Team Championship. She is the fifth Women’s Grand Slam Champion and seventh Women’s Triple Crown Champion. She was also a member of Judgment Day along with Dominik Mysterio, Finn Balor, Damien Pries,t and JD McDonagh.

Why does Dom call Rhea Ripley Mami?

Dominik Mysterio started calling Rhea Ripley "Mami" after turning on his father, Rey Mysterio, and joining The Judgment Day. The name "Mami" was partly inspired by Eddie Guerrero, who used to call Chyna the same. After the heel turn, Dominik began referencing the 2005 storyline where Eddie and Rey fought over his custody, claiming himself as Eddie’s real son. He embraced Eddie’s “Latino Heat” character and began teaming up with Rhea Ripley in a way that reminded fans of Eddie and Chyna. While Eddie called himself “Papi” and Chyna “Mami,” Dominik flipped the dynamic by calling Ripley “Mami”. In the wrestling world, 'Mami' has come to represent a woman who portrays a strong, powerful figure.

While talking on NotSamWrestling, Rhea Ripley shared how the name ‘Mami’ started. She explained that the idea came from Damian Priest since it wouldn’t make sense for her to call herself ‘Papi.’

“[Mami] was a Priest thing. I went out there, came back after kneeing myself in the face and busting my front two teeth, I had braces for a week; it was great. I came back from that, and we came back on Rey’s anniversary. That’s where I decided to be a little menace, be myself, and I ordered an Eddie Guerrero shirt, and I came out with ‘I’m Your Papi’ shirt, just to see what the hell was going to happen from that,” she said.
