Jewell Loyd, nicknamed the "Gold Mamba" by Kobe Bryant, is an American women's basketball star who plays for the Las Vegas Aces. She was drafted first overall in 2015 by the Storm. After an impressive rookie season, she won the WNBA Rookie of the Year Award while averaging 10.7 points per game, playing 34 games. In her second season, Loyd averaged 16.5 points per game and became a star guard in the WNBA. She was a key contributor to the Storm's championship wins in 2018 and 2020. Loyd was named to the All-WNBA First Team in 2021, averaging 17.9 points, 3.8 assists, and 1.48 steals per game. She also made the All-WNBA Second Team in 2016 and 2023.

Beyond the WNBA, Loyd has played in basketball leagues worldwide, including in Turkey, Spain, China, South Korea, and the EuroLeague. She has played for teams like Galatasaray, Shanxi Flame, and Perfumerías Avenida. In 2025, she joined Mist BC for the inaugural season of Unrivaled, a 3x3 basketball league. Loyd is one of the most prolific scorers in the WNBA. She once held the record for most points scored in a single season when she scored 939 points in the 2023 season. It was broken by A'ja Wilson in 2024. During the 2024 WNBA season, Jewell Loyd averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

Jewell Loyd attended the University of Notre Dame and played college basketball for their team Notre Dame Fighting Irish. In her three-year college career, Loyd scored 1909 points, seventh most in Notre Dame’s history. She played with several future WNBA guards like Kayla McBride, Lindsay Allen, and her fellow teammate Skylar Diggins at the Seattle Storm.

She had a decorated college career on both individual as well as team levels, winning the Big East regular season and conference tournament championship in her freshman year. After Notre Dame moved to the ACC Conference, Loyd led the Fighting Irish women’s roster to a two-consecutive regular season and conference tournament championship. She was named MVP for both conference tournament championships (2014 and 2015).

On an individual level, Loyd was named the Big East Freshman of the Year (2013) and ACC Player of the Year (2015). She made multiple first-team All-ACC appearances in (2014 and 2015) and ACC All-Defensive Teams in (2014 and 2015). On a national level, Loyd was named on the second-team All-American-AP (2014) and first-team All-American- AP (2015), also winning the espnW National Player of the Year in 2015.

As a freshman during the 2012-13, she averaged 12.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. During her sophomore season (2013-14), she averaged 18.6 points per game, 2.1 assists and 1.6 steals per game. In her junior year (2014-15), she averaged 19.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.

Jewell Loyd High School

Born in Lincolnwood, Illinois, Jewell Loyd played high school basketball at Niles West High School in Skokie. She was a four-year starter and averaged 24.8 points and 11.9 rebounds per game while scoring 3,077 career points. Under her leadership, the team achieved a 93–31 record. Loyd was named a McDonald’s All-American in 2012.
