Indianapolis 500 2025 History
The Indianapolis 500 (Indy 500) is an annual race held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana, United States. The previous names of the race were - the 500-Mile International Sweepstakes (1911-1915, 1920-1941, 1946-1980), the 300-Mile International Sweepstakes (1916), and the Liberty Sweepstakes (1919). While the first-ever race here was held in 1911, with Ray Harroun winning, the first-ever IndyCar race was held in 1996 and was won by Buddy Lazier. The Indy 500 is held during the American Memorial Day weekend, usually the last weekend of May, and is considered a part of the IndyCar Series. The circuit of the Indy 500 consists of an Asphalt surface with four turns, and a length of 2.5 mi (4.0 km).
In 1994, Tony George, the Speedway owner, announced plans for a new series, known as the Indy Racing League, with the Indy 500 as its main competitive event. This event and series allowed more oval circuits and more opportunities for drivers from the USAC sprint-car ranks. During the 1960s and 1970s, NASCAR drivers, including Bobby Allison, Donnie Allison, Cale Yarborough, and Lee Roy Yarbrough, contested in the Indy 500 as well as the Coca-Cola 600 (a NASCAR event).
