The Indy 500 is one of the most historic and iconic motorsport events to take place. With over a century plus of history and traditions, the opportunity to participate, or even be a part of it, becomes a lifetime highlight. Motorsports reporter Jamie Little recently came out and revealed the story behind how she became the first woman to join the Indy 500 broadcast team.
Jamie Little featured on the Throttle Therapy podcast with IndyCar driver Katherine Legge, and discussed all things motorsports, including her career and how she got into reporting and journalism. Little revealed how she was interested in Supercross and Motocross racing in her late teens, and decided to pursue a career in the same.
She began working with a freelancer, who worked for ESNP, and eventually made her way up the ladder. Jamie Little was set to make her broadcast debut for IndyCar in 2004 and covered the initial races. Jamie Little wasn't on the plans of ESPN for the Indy 500, but her performance early in the season gave her a seat on the broadcast team.
Katherine Legge, on the latest episode of the Throttle Therapy podcast, asked Jamie Little the moment when she realized that she was a ‘unicorn’, for being a woman in motorsports broadcasting. Little revealed the 2004 story and shared the story as she said,
“When you ask the question, my mind immediately went to 2004.That was my first Indy 500. That's when I just started covering the IndyCar series three months before. My bosses at ESPN were like, hey, what do you know about auto racing?” (8:30 onwards)
“And I said, well, I do super cross motocross, X games. I could figure it out. And six weeks later, I went to my first IndyCar test at Phoenix. And I was like, this is freaking awesome. Three weeks later, I was covering my first race at Homestead. And then I was covering all the practices and qualifying at the Indy 500,” added Little
“And I wasn't supposed to be on the race because they already had their, their four-hit reporters. I guess I did a good enough job that they asked me to join. And I became the first woman in history to be part of the Indy 500 broadcast.”
Jamie Little joined Danica Patrick for FOX’s coverage of the 2025 Indy 500
FOX took over the exclusive broadcasting rights of IndyCar ahead of the 2025 IndyCar season. To celebrate the same, the Indy 500 featured a special broadcasting team which included former IndyCar driver Danica Patrick, NASCAR legend Tony Stewart, and Jamie Little.
Jamie Little was one of the pitlane reporters while Patrick and Stewart featured as analysts in the on-track studio. Speaking about the role that FOX expected Jamie Little to play in cross-promoting IndyCar and NASCAR, Little said,
“We're going to try to cross-promote as much as we can. It's our first doubleheader. INDYCAR is the first race followed by NASCAR. I'm the one person that does both, so they're asking me to be there to try to blend those two worlds.”
Jamie Little currently works as a pitlane reporter and play-by-play announcer for FOX’s NASCAR coverage.
