Yuki Tsunoda has revealed a major handicap that he and other Red Bull teammates face when they work alongside Max Verstappen. He highlighted that Gianpiero Lambiase serves as both the chief engineer and Verstappen's race engineer, which means his attention can shift toward the Dutchman whenever issues arise with the lead car.

After only 22 races with Red Bull Racing, Yuki Tsunoda has been shown the exit door as another driver fails to settle into the second seat at the Austrian outfit. He will be replaced by Isack Hadjar for 2026 and will not have a spot on the grid next season, which leaves him taking up the role of reserve driver.

In a recent interview with DAZN, Tsunoda outlined a major hurdle he faced during his time at Red Bull and said it centered on Max Verstappen's race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase.

"GP is one of the most amazing engineers I've ever met. His ideas are truly amazing. He's the chief engineer, so he looks after my chassis too, but if something isn't going well with Max, he inevitably ends up focusing on that," said Tsunoda.
"My engineers are also excellent, but to be honest they don't have much experience, so I need his help. But sometimes I can't ask for it," he added.

Gianpiero Lambiase was promoted to Head of Racing at Red Bull in 2024 after a management reshuffle that followed Jonathan Wheatley's exit. He also kept his position as Max Verstappen's race engineer, which left him handling two major roles at the Milton Keynes-based outfit.

This move placed him near the top of Red Bull's trackside structure with only team principal Laurent Mekies and technical director Pierre Wache above him. Yuki Tsunoda's comments have now underlined the challenge created by Lambiase's split responsibilities.

Yuki Tsunoda reflected on his time as Max Verstappen’s teammate after the Abu Dhabi season finale and said he learned a great deal from the 4x world champion. He also called Verstappen the best driver on the grid and added that watching him work behind the scenes was a source of inspiration.

Going forward, Tsunoda will remain trackside with Red Bull in 2026 as their test and reserve driver after missing out on another race seat due to the late timing of his exit. He also lost out to Liam Lawson for the Racing Bulls drive, while junior prospect Arvid Lindblad has also been promoted to the sister team.
