McLaren star Oscar Piastri lost the 2025 F1 title to his teammate Lando Norris after leading the championship for half the season. The Australian was still in contention going into the season finale, but wasn't able to close the gap to the champion. After the race, Piastri was seen getting a group hug from his mother, Nicole and his three sisters, Hattie, Edie and Mae.

Oscar Piastri was in the lead of the F1 championship after the first quarter of the season. The Australian driver maintained the lead and was over 30 points ahead of Norris after the Briton retired at the Dutch GP. However, since the Dutch GP, things went south for Piastri.

The McLaren team ordered at the Italian GP to swap cars after a slow stop for Norris, and the crash at the Azerbaijan GP led to a drop in the Australian driver's form. In the next few races, Norris clawed his way back to the championship lead.

Going into the penultimate race weekend in Qatar, Piastri was 24 points behind Norris. Had McLaren not made the strategic disaster, Piastri would've likely won the race and been closer in the title battle. Regardless, all Norris needed in the finale at Abu Dhabi was to finish on the podium, which he did and won the championship.

After parking the car on the main straight, Oscar Piastri got out and congratulated his teammate on the F1 title. The Australian, who's famous for keeping a cool head and emotions out of racing, was then comforted by his mother and sisters, who gave him a group. Ahead of the race weekend, both McLaren drivers confirmed that their parents and family will be attending the Abu Dhabi GP.

As Nicole hugged her son, Piastri's three sisters, Hattie, Edie and Mae, emerged behind their mother, joined the hug and comforted the McLaren driver.

“We gave it everything” - Oscar Piastri reacts to losing the 2025 F1 World Championship to Lando Norris

Oscar Piastri started the Abu Dhabi GP on the hard tires while both his title rivals were on the mediums. Despite that, Piastri was able to make an outrageously good move on his teammate on the outside of Turn 9 on Lap 1. Unfortunately, finishing P2 wasn't enough to win the title, and Piastri ended P3 in the championship.

Speaking with Sky Sports about the race at Yas Marina circuit, Piastri said,

“We gave it everything. We tried a bit of a gamble on strategy, tried absolutely everything to try and win the race and give ourselves the best opportunity to win the championship but ultimately we didn't have the pace today. Gave it absolutely everything and that's all you can ask for.”

Max Verstappen won the race and finished just two points behind Lando Norris. Piastri ended up 13 points short the the champion's tally.
