The first lap of the Mexico GP saw a melee involving multiple cars. This was when Lawson and Sainz made contact, resulting in the destruction of the floor and front wing of Lawson's car. As a consequence, the Racing Bulls driver had to retire from the race.

Liam Lawson, who started his race from P15, was far from impressed with the outcome. Speaking to the media after the race, the RB driver slammed the Williams man. He said:

“A lot of guys were sliding in Turn 1, but I left plenty of space next to Carlos, and I think he's decided to cut the chicane. But he hasn't looked left, and I'm right there, he's driving into me. It's something that just sucks. I think you've got to have more awareness, honestly. It's destroyed the side of my car, and I had to retire.

“I'm not saying he's done it intentionally. I'm sure he's not intentionally driven into me, but it's just one of those things. I mean, I completely understand it's Turn 1 on the first lap, it's chaotic, but we're all trying to be aware of what's going on, and you can't just decide to cut the chicane without looking to your left, because he's hit me so hard that it's just destroyed the whole side of the floor, broke my front wing, and just killed our race," he further added.

Carlos Sainz, on the other hand, also incurred damage to his car and had to face the DNF. Lando Norris of McLaren claimed the win and took the lead in the Drivers' Championship. Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen ended up in P2 and P3, respectively.

"We had contact in Turn 1, a big melee of three or four cars that were side by side. In that contact, we damaged the rim of the first set of tyres that were giving massive vibrations,” the Spaniard explained. We lost all the sensors of the front tyres which meant we lost the possibility to engage the pit limiter."

After 20 races and four sprints, Carlos Sainz is in P11 with 38 points. His teammate, Alex Albon, is in P8 with 73 points. Liam Lawson is in P15 with 30 points.
