Red Bull star Max Verstappen cut the championship gap down to just 12 points after winning the Qatar GP. In the closing moments of the race, an oversteer moment for Kimi Antonelli allowed Lando Norris to pass him, prompting accusations from Gianpiero Lambiase and Helmut Marko. The Milton Keynes-based outfit recently issued an apology for the same, with Mercedes responding to it.

Max Verstappen settled into P2 at the 2025 Qatar GP after passing Lando Norris off the start when Nico Hulkenberg brought out the safety car. A strategic blunder from McLaren meant the Red Bull star got into the effective race lead, and Norris came out P5 after his last stop.

An oversteer moment for Kimi Antonelli in the last couple of laps allowed Norris to pass the F1 rookie and move up to P4. This led to a radio from Max Verstappen's race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, suggesting Antonelli let Norris by.

After the race ended, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko also accused the Mercedes driver of letting the McLaren star pass. The statements led to the Italian driver receiving abuse on social media. Red Bull Racing came out and issued a public statement the day after the Qatar GP and apologised for the accusations.

“Comments made before the end of and immediately after the Qatar GP suggesting that Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli had deliberately allowed Lando Norris to overtake him are clearly incorrect. Replay footage shows Antonelli momentarily losing control of his car, thus allowing Norris to pass him. We sincerely regret that this has led to Kimi receiving online abuse,” read the statement from Red Bull posted on X

Mercedes' official account on X took to the comment section of the tweet, and responded with,

“Abuse is never acceptable. Appreciate you setting the record straight 🙏 See you on track in Abu Dhabi 👊”

What did Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko and Max Verstappen's race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase say after Kimi Antonelli’s mistake?

As the championship stood after the final stop, Max Verstappen would've had a 10-point margin over the McLaren star going into the final race at Abu Dhabi. Lando Norris was chasing Kimi Antonelli in P4 in the closing stages of the races, but couldn't overtake due to the high straight line speed on the Mercedes before an honest mistake from the Italian let him pass.

“Not sure what happened to Antonelli, Max. It looks like he just pulled over and let Norris through,”

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko came out after the race, as he said,

“It was twice where he more or less waved Lando by. It was so obvious. Antonelli now helps our main competitor, in Austria he was crashing [Verstappen] in the rear.”

Toto Wolff came out and defended his driver and had a conversation with Gianpiero Lambiase after the race. Helmut Marko has also come out since and apologised for his comments.
