Ferrari are eyeing Lewis Hamilton's former teammate George Russell for the 2027 season. Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton signed with Ferrari ahead of the 2025 F1 season. However, the Briton's debut season with the Scuderia hasn't been up to mark with Hamilton struggling in the SF25, and failing to match Charles Leclerc's level of performance. Amid the recent reports around Hamilton's contract, his former teammate George Russell was reported as a candidate for a Scuderia seat for 2027.

Lewis Hamilton became the holder of the unwanted record of being the Ferrari driver with the most races without a podium, breaking Didier Pironi’s four-decade-old record. Amid his performance gremlins, recent reports came out suggesting that the Briton's current Ferrari contract, which ends after the 2026 season, isn't expected to be renewed or extended by the Maranello-based team.

Reports of Charles Leclerc also looking elsewhere amid Ferrari's inability to build a championship-contending car have also been circling the paddock. The reports suggest that the Monegasque manager has had talks with Aston Martin, Mercedes, and McLaren about a possible future.

While all these rumors filled the paddock, Italian outlet Corriere della Sera came out and suggested that Ferrari is considering George Russell as a possible driver for the 2027 season, as the Briton is highly regarded by the Maranello-based outfit.

Corriere della Serra reported that if Verstappen reached an agreement with Mercedes, Russell, fresh from his contract renewal, would leave the team. He could join Ferrari, where he's highly regarded at the top.

George Russell recently signed a new contract with Mercedes, a 1+1-year deal. It was reported that the second year, i.e., 2027, that it will automatically trigger if the Briton meets certain performance criteria. However, Toto Wolff and Co. are also reported to be pursuing Max Verstappen for the 2027 season, in which case, Russell could be let go.

Lewis Hamilton addressed his early Ferrari partnership struggles

Lewis Hamilton recently came out and spoke with Ferrari for an exclusive interview. Leclerc has been on the podium seven times this year, while Hamilton has failed to make that step even once. The Briton detailed how it takes time to gel with a team before the peak performance arrives.

“Everyone expects to win straight away but ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day.’ How long did it take? We’ll have to look that up. Only when you’re inside a team can you really, truly understand how it works and how F1 works. You can’t imagine how the machine really operates otherwise. I’ve been in F1 for so long, but when I came to this team it really was different again. So I don’t blame people for not knowing.” said Lewis Hamilton via Motorsport.

Lewis Hamilton currently sits in P6 in the championship, 64 points behind his teammate Charles Leclerc in P5.
