Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton went side by side into the first turn at the 2025 Mexican GP, with the Monegasque coming out in the front after cutting the corner. F1 Pundit and former F1 driver Karun Chandhok came out and suggested that Leclerc should've been penalized for the overtake on his teammate.

Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton qualified P2 and P3, respectively, for the race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Hamilton, starting on the outside line, got a better start off the line compared to his teammate and was able to get alongside the Monegasque going into the first corner.

Hamilton had the inside line, but still managed to give enough space to Leclerc on his outside. However, the #16 driver lost control of the car on the dusty outside line and ended up cutting the corner and coming out into the lead before giving the position back to Lando Norris.

F1 pundit Karun Chandhok analyzed the incident after the race and broke down every aspect of it. The former F1 driver claimed that Leclerc should've given the position back to Hamilton, who was ahead at the apex and was in control of the car.

“I think there’s a good argument to say [Charles] should have given a place back, but Ferrari were never going to argue that point. I think if it was two different teams, absolutely!” said Chandhok

“David Croft up in commentary as well was pretty adamant that Charles should have been penalised. It’s the first time we’ve had a chance to see these angles and really understand it. The stewards would have had this during the race and decided not to look at it. Obviously Ferrari wouldn’t have complained. But having seen that, I do see that point,” added Karun Chandhok

Max Verstappen also cut the first corner after being pushed onto the kerbs by Charles Leclerc, and barely managed to keep the car out of the barriers.

George Russell was left dumbfounded by the decision not to penalize Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen for the Turn 1 incident

George Russell started the race in P5 but was overtaken by Max Verstappen, who had a great start off the line. However, going into Turn 1, Charles Leclerc and Verstappen cut the corner and rejoined the track into Turn 3. Russell immediately took to the radio questioning whether the two drivers got a penalty.

After the race, Russell suggested that he was shocked at the fact that neither Charles Leclerc nor Max Verstappen got a penalty for it.

“I struggle to understand how three drivers can just cut the first corner and continue. It punishes the drivers who have driven correctly, and if you can risk everything with no downside, that is what drivers are going to do. It has always been the case here in Mexico – people cutting Turn 1. So I was frustrated.” (via F1’s official website)

Charles Leclerc was able to hold off a charging Max Verstappen in the final laps of the race with the help of a virtual safety car and finished the race in P2.
