Former F1 drivers Damon Hill and Karun Chandhok clashed online while discussing McLaren’s strategy at the Qatar Grand Prix. Chandhok was critical of the Papaya team’s decision not to pit during the early safety car, while Hill argued it's easy to judge from "the comfy chair."McLaren went from podium contenders in Qatar to fighting through the field after choosing not to pit either Oscar Piastri or Lando Norris when the safety car came out on Lap 8. With every other driver stopping and a mandated two-stop race at Lusail, McLaren effectively put themselves a pit stop behind the rest of the field.Although both Piastri and Norris recovered to finish inside the top four, the strategy error likely cost Piastri a comfortable win and Norris a P3. Sky Sports pundit Karun Chandhok questioned the calls post-race, suggesting McLaren may have tried too hard to stay fair and, in doing so, compromised both drivers instead of just one.Damon Hill replied to this post on Monday, insinuating that the McLaren team had a tough call to make. The 1996 F1 world champion also told Chandhok that it is easier for him to criticize the call from "the comfy chair"."That's not the point Karun. The point is, do you want to be the person who makes the call? Very different from the comfy chair. Even if you were standing up in the paddock," wrote Hill.Damon Hill @HillF1LINKThat's not the point Karun. The point is, do you want to be the person who makes the call? The Indian former racing driver also reminded Hill of his own experience at the 1995 Monaco Grand Prix."My chair was quite comfy actually! But in reality, it is their job to make that call - like the other 9 teams, Not mine. A bit like your team making the call to pit twice in Monaco 1995 when you were so dominant in Qualifying and ended up over 30 seconds behind."Karun Chandhok @karunchandhokLINKMy chair was quite comfy actually! This call gifted him the race win, and the events on Sunday also mean that the Dutchman is now only 12 points behind Lando Norris in the drivers' standings with one race to go.McLaren boss explains rationale behind costly strategy blunder at the Qatar GPOscar Piastri and Lando Norris after the Qatar Grand Prix - Source: GettyMcLaren team principal Andrea Stella recently explained that the team decided to stay out during the Lap 7 safety car at the Qatar GP as they did not want to get stuck in the pack. The Italian also admitted that the Woking-based team made a mistake with the decision, as it cost Oscar Piastri the race win.Speaking after the race on Sunday, Stella explained the reasoning behind not pitting on Lap 7."The reason was that we didn't want to end up in traffic after the pit stop but obviously all the other cars and teams had a different opinion in relation to a safety car at lap seven," said Stella [via Sky Sports].Stella then admitted that their decision immediately proved to be wrong as every other driver pitted behind them. He also explained that Max Verstappen's pace meant they were unable to make up the lost ground afterwards, before concluding that they had definitely made the incorrect decision in the end.
