Red Bull star Max Verstappen missed out on the 2025 F1 title by two points as Lando Norris took the championship in Abu Dhabi. During the post-race interviews, the Dutchman was angered by a reporter who asked him about the incident with George Russell at the Spanish GP.

Verstappen had a subpar first half of the 2025 season as he struggled with the troublesome RB21. He was 104 points behind the leader after the Dutch GP. But courtesy the upgrades brought to the RB21, he was able to fight for wins and start gaining ground on the McLaren duo.

Going into the season finale, Max Verstappen was only 12 points behind the championship leader. The Dutchman did all he could by dominating the race, but unfortunately for him that wasn't enough. Norris finished P3 and clinched the title by just 2 points.

During the post-race interviews, Verstappen was questioned whether his incident at Barcelona with George Russell cost him the championship. The Dutchman lost his cool and said:

“You forget all the other stuff that happened in my season, the only thing you mention is Barcelona. I knew that would come. And you're giving me a stupid grin now.
“It's part of racing at the end. You live and learn. A championship is won over 24 rounds. I've also had a lot of early Christmas presents given to me in the second half. So you can also question that."

The Red Bull driver was passed by Charles Leclerc during a safety car restart at Barcelona, followed by a side-to-side battle with George Russell. Verstappen slammed into the Mercedes on the restart lap whilst going into a turn, and was given a 10-second penalty for it, which dropped him from P5 to P9.

Similarly, Kimi Antonelli crashed into Max Verstappen at the Austrian GP, which was another race where the Dutchman lost points. That said, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri also had their share of bad luck, including the Briton's engine failure at Zandvoort and Piastri's crash at Azerbaijan.

Max Verstappen accepted the George Russell incident at Barcelona as the “only point of criticism”

In early November, Max Verstappen reflected on the 2025 season during an interview with Viaplay. While doing so, the Red Bull star detailed how the situation with George Russell at the Spanish GP was the "only point of criticism."

He said:

“I am happy with my season. The only point of criticism is the situation in Barcelona. What happened there, of course, wasn’t great, but it also came from the fact that I really care. I could also have said ‘my car isn’t fast, I’ll let it go’. It's in part the fact that I cannot accept from myself, when I get out of the car, that I haven’t done everything and given everything. That makes me mad at myself.”

The four time F1 champion came out after the Qatar GP and said he was in the title contention only because of other teams' failures.
