Reportedly, Charles Leclerc has seemingly been approached by Aston Martin, and the Ferrari man has had a discussion with the team for a possible seat in 2027. Looking at where the driver is right now in his career, Leclerc might consider the jump and finalize the move early in 2026.
The 2026 F1 season is going to see the introduction of a brand new set of regulations. The cars are going to be new, and so will be the power units. In all of this, it's often a case of who has the first mover's advantage and who capitalizes on that more than others.
For Charles Leclerc, a driver who is in his 7th season with Ferrari and will be running his 8th in 2026, it's time for a change, and Aston Martin is the perfect destination.
Ferrari's prospects don't seem good
In all fairness, Ferrari as a team has not been making the right noise this season. The team does not look like a well-oiled machine that has the momentum behind it and is ready to take over in the new regulations.
On the contrary, things don't look good. The Ferrari chairman doesn't seem too impressed with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton being vocal. At the same time, if you look at the car, it's not in good shape.
To make matters worse, two of the leading men of the Ferrari power unit project have left and will be joining Audi. That's not the kind of team that is ready to fight at the sharp end of the grid and take titles. Charles Leclerc joined the team in 2019 and has been a part of the setup since then.
At some point, you have to bite the bullet and accept that things are not going to work out.
If not 2026 or 2027, the Aston Martin project has all the right elements
The most important thing about Aston Martin is that it has the ingredients in place now. The next step? Finding the perfect recipe and fitting the pieces in the jigsaw puzzle.
It has a potent power unit from Honda. Then you have some of the best facilities in F1 at Silverstone. Couple that with the technical genius of Adrian Newey, and you have a setup that is almost destined to figure things out at some point. Whether they do it in 2026, 2027, or 2028, this is a setup that one can rest assured is on a trajectory to some kind of success.
Charles Leclerc needs to pounce before Max Verstappen and George Russell get interested
Now comes the most important part of the puzzle, which is the fact that Aston Martin has approached Charles Leclerc for one critical reason; the other two top drivers, Max Verstappen and George Russell, have not been swayed yet. Both Russell and Verstappen are leaning towards a future with Mercedes at the moment in some capacity.
Charles Leclerc, on the other hand, is arguably the top driver who is most frustrated in his current situation. George Russell has 2026 to look forward to, where, if reports are to be believed, he could have the best car on the grid at Mercedes. Max Verstappen, on his part, is in a situation where if things go well at Red Bull with the power unit, he'll stick around.
If they don't, one has to think that Toto Wolff could potentially have a door open for the Dutch driver. Charles Leclerc, on the other hand, is in a situation where Ferrari's chairman has publicly told him to essentially keep his mouth shut and drive while the team shows no signs of improvement or progress.
There's a point at which you have to take the plunge, and for Charles Leclerc, it would be a smart call if he starts developing relations with Aston Martin as his way out from Ferrari, a place that seems to be more and more of a dead end now.
