Marcus Freeman was announced as the 30th head football coach for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on December 3, 2021. During his first season in 2022, the team finished with a 9-4 record and won the Gator Bowl against South Carolina, who were ranked 19 nationally. His team also collected four crucial victories, the most notable one being against the No. 5 Clemson Tigers. In 2023, Freeman's team improved the overall record to 10-3 and also won the Sun Bowl game against Oregon State.
