Marcus Freeman, a former linebacker, is now the head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. While playing linebacker at Ohio State University, Freeman started his collegiate football career. He was recognized as a two-time Second-team All-Big Ten selection during his time in college.

Before entering the coaching profession, Freeman served as an assistant coach at Ohio State University, Purdue University, Kent State University, and the University of Cincinnati. Before becoming the head coach, he served as Notre Dame's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2021.

Marcus Freeman’s salary

Freeman earned more than $7.4 million in total compensation for the 2023-24 academic year, and that again made Freeman the highest-paid employee at the university according to USA Today. Freeman earned nearly $6.2 million in base compensation for his second season at the helm. Remaining pay came in the form of bonuses and incentives ($460,950), other reportable compensation ($704,355), retirement and other deferred compensation ($33,000), and nontaxable benefits ($28,828). Freeman's salary for the 2024/25 season is not out in the public as of August 2025, but it is expected to be more than the 2023/24 season as he signed a new deal in December 2024.

In 2022, Freeman agreed to a five-year, $6.68 million deal with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, according to 247Sports. According to CBS Sports, Freeman's contract with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish was extended until 2030 in December 2024. Forbes claims that Freeman's new contract will bring in over $9 million.

After the Fighting Irish concluded the regular season with an 11-1 record, Freeman signed a multi-year contract deal with Notre Dame just before the College Football Playoffs. Forbes reports that Marcus Freeman agreed to a contract extension through the 2030 season, raising his yearly compensation from $7 million to over $9 million. The team has a 33-10 record under Freeman's leadership since he took over in December 2021. The Fighting Irish finished the 2024 season with a 14-2 overall record and the eighth seed in the College Football Playoffs under his direction, according to the Fighting Irish's Official website.
