Sinner's successful title defense at the Australian Open was immediately overshadowed by his three-month ban on account of his doping violations from a year ago. He returned to the tour at the Italian Open and lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the final. A similar fate awaited him at the French Open, going down to the Spaniard in the summit clash after blowing three match points.
While Sinner couldn't defend his title in Halle, he avenged his previous losses to Alcaraz by beating him in the Wimbledon final. However, the Spaniard brought an end to his title defense at the Cincinnati Open and US Open by defeating him in the final of both tournaments.

Unlike Sinner, Bergs didn't receive a first-round bye in Paris and took on Alex Michelsen in his opener. After splitting the first two sets, the Belgian stepped up his game in the deciding set, breaking his opponent's serve twice to score a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win.

After an unexpected end to his time in Shanghai, Sinner got back on track with a title in Vienna. A title in Paris coupled with an early exit from Alcaraz will help him dislodge his younger rival from the top of the rankings. The Italian has a 48-6 record this season, with a 29-3 record on hardcourts.
