Under the new Davis Cup format, Italy was assured of a quarterfinal spot in the Davis Cup Finals as the host nation. Austria, on the other hand, had to go through two rounds to make the last eight. They had it quite easy against Finland, going 4-0 against them in the first qualifying round.
Things got tricky for the Austrians against Hungary in the second qualifying round in September. Jurij Rodionov and Lukas Neumayer each scored three-set wins to give them a 2-0 lead. However, Hungary bounced back by winning the next two ties to level the proceedings. Rodionov then clinched the tie in their favor with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Fucsovics.

Cobolli is the highest-ranked player in this tie but 11-19 record on hardcourts makes him susceptible to an upset. While he won his previous match against Misolic, which was on clay.
