Italy vs Austria preview

Two-time defending champions Italy will face Austria in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup 2025.
Under the new Davis Cup format, Italy was assured of a quarterfinal spot in the Davis Cup Finals as the host nation. Austria, on the other hand, had to go through two rounds to make the last eight. They had it quite easy against Finland, going 4-0 against them in the first qualifying round.
Things got tricky for the Austrians against Hungary in the second qualifying round in September. Jurij Rodionov and Lukas Neumayer each scored three-set wins to give them a 2-0 lead. However, Hungary bounced back by winning the next two ties to level the proceedings. Rodionov then clinched the tie in their favor with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Fucsovics.
Italy leads Austria 5-1 in the head-to-head. Austria won their previous showdown 5-0 during the 1990 edition. As they renew their rivalry after three decades, here's a look into the match-ups and predictions for their upcoming tie (match-ups are subject to change):
#1. Lorenzo Sonego vs Jurij Rodionov
Sonego has a 25-29 record this year. A quarterfinal showing at the Australian Open and a fourth-round appearance at Wimbledon stand out as his best performances. He recently made the semifinals of the Moselle Open as well. He has a 6-3 record at the Davis Cup.
Rodionov has a 3-1 record on the main tour this season. He has done well for himself on the Challenger tour, winning one title and posting a 35-22 record. He has a 7-5 record at the Davis Cup. This will be his first main draw meeting against Sonego.
#2. Flavio Cobolli vs Filip Misolic
Cobolli advanced to his maiden Major quarterfinal at Wimbledon this year. He also won a couple of titles, and made his top 20 debut at No. 17. He has an overall record of 31-27 this season, and a 1-1 record while representing Italy in the Davis Cup.
Misolic has a 9-9 record on the ATP Tour, and a 27-13 record on the Challenger Tour. He won two titles from three finals on the latter tour this year. He has a 2-0 record while representing Austria. Cobolli leads their rivalry 1-0, having won their only meeting en route to the Bucharest title earlier this year.
#3. Simone Bolelli/Andrea Vavassori vs Alexander Erler/Lucas Miedler
Bolelli and Vavassori won four titles together in 2025, and were the finalists at the Australian Open as well. Overall they've won seven titles from 13 titles since teaming up together. They have a 1-2 record as a team while representing Italy.
Erler and Miedler parted ways at the end of the 2024 season. They captured seven titles from 10 finals during their partnership. Erler competed with different partners this year, and won his only title of the year with Robert Galloway in Stockholm. Mielder's partnership with Francisco Cabral yielded three titles. They have a 6-2 record as a pair while playing for their country.

Italy vs Austria prediction

With Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti both being unavailable this time, Italy's odds of a three-peat at the Davis Cup have diminished slightly. Cobolli is the highest-ranked player in this tie but 11-19 record on hardcourts makes him susceptible to an upset. While he won his previous match against Misolic, which was on clay.
Sonego will be favored to beat Rodionov considering their results this year. The doubles tie could go either way. The Italians have played together all year and are in sync, while the Austrian duo have only teamed up to play for their country. Bolelli and Vavassori will have a slight edge if the deciding doubles match comes into play.
Pick: Italy to win 2-1.
